I start with the moments that are set in stone, like speeches and dinner service, then work backwards. If we're doing a bouquet toss, I'll put it right after a slow song so the floor is full and the energy is right, not as a random interruption.
What's your backup plan if equipment fails?
I carry a full backup rig for every wedding, not just a spare cable. Two laptops, two mixers, a battery-powered speaker small enough to run ceremony audio if the power dips. In eight years I've never needed the whole setup, but it's there.
Can you just play the songs on our list and not take requests?
We can do that, and I will if it's what you want. But I've found that the best nights happen when I have room to read the moment. I'll always prioritize your list, and any request that doesn't fit gets a quiet no.
The most underrated skill for a wedding DJ is knowing when to let a song breathe. A cold cut on a packed floor feels like a slap. I let tracks play long enough for people to finish their move, then mix out on the one while they're still smiling.
