Lago, from a DJ who's played it.

Lago sits right on Dow's Lake, in the pavilion that took over the lake's original boathouse footprint after the 1931 building came down in 1979. The venue runs two floors, and that split is the whole job from a DJ's chair. Downstairs, the main restaurant is a big open room, over 7,000 square feet with wall-to-wall lake views, that seats up to 250 or opens to about 440 for a standing reception. Upstairs, the Vista Room is the tighter, view-forward space - panoramic windows over Dow's Lake and Queen Juliana Park, built for a more intimate crowd. Sean has played both, and treats them as two different rooms rather than one venue with two names: the main floor gets sound built to fill a big open space without fighting the wall of glass, the Vista Room gets a system sized down so it stays full and warm instead of echoey.

Two floors, two different rooms.

Where your reception lands at Lago changes the setup. Here's the shape of the space, floor by floor.

1
Main Restaurant
Ground floor

Over 7,000 sq ft of open dining room with wall-to-wall lake views. Seats up to 250, opens to about 440 for a standing reception.

About 175 extra seats off the main restaurant when the weather's in play.

4

Confirm the exact seated number for your room with the venue. Sean scales the sound and lighting to whichever floor you book.

What Sean brings to a Lago wedding.

Honest note: every couple runs their day a little differently. Share your exact run-of-show on the call - entrances, speeches, first dance, which floor you're on - and Sean tailors the setup to your room rather than assuming the logistics here.

Lago is at 1001 Queen Elizabeth Driveway on Dow's Lake, close to the Rideau Canal and the Central Experimental Farm - central Ottawa, not a drive out of town. That means predictable load-in and no travel guesswork for Sean.

Planning a Lago wedding? Here's what I know.

How many guests can Lago hold?

It splits by floor. The main restaurant seats up to 250 and opens to about 440 for a standing reception, while the Vista Room upstairs holds up to 110 seated or around 220 for cocktails. Confirm the exact number for your room with the venue, and I'll scale the sound and lighting to your real headcount.

What's the difference between the main restaurant and the Vista Room?

The main restaurant is the big open floor downstairs, over 7,000 square feet with wall-to-wall lake views. The Vista Room is upstairs, smaller and more intimate, with its own panoramic view of Dow's Lake and Queen Juliana Park. I run a different sound setup for each - fuller and more spread out downstairs, sized down and warmer upstairs.

Is there outdoor space at Lago?

Yes. The main restaurant has a wraparound patio with about 175 seats, and the Vista Room upstairs has its own smaller 70-seat patio. Both are seasonal, so I plan around what's actually open for your date.

Can we have the ceremony at Lago too?

Lago's spaces are built around the reception, not a dedicated ceremony room, so confirm ceremony options directly with the venue before you book. If you do run vows on-site, I bring a separate wireless setup for it so the sound doesn't compete with the room you're using for the reception.

From the booth

Hey, it's Sean. Lago at Dow's Lake is my number one room in the city, tied with Belvedere and honestly edging it for me because it's central and plug and play. It runs across two floors, and some days they'll host two weddings on two floors at once and still stay flawlessly organized, which almost no venue pulls off. The AV is plug and play so load-in and setup are fast, the Dow's Lake views are unreal, and the staff and bartenders are seasoned veterans with owner Janaya running the floor hands-on. They even run a guest shuttle back and forth. One small heads up, daytime parking can be tricky if they're moving a boat out of the dock, so I plan load-in timing around it.

Good questions

How do you set up sound in a smaller room like this so it still feels full but not overwhelming?

I bring compact, high-headroom speakers and place them to focus the floor, not the tables. That keeps the edges conversational and the middle punchy without creeping into harsh.

Does a smaller guest list hurt the dance floor energy?

Actually, a tight room fills faster and feels alive sooner. I build from whoever moves first, and the proximity makes it contagious because everyone can see the energy a few feet away.

How do you handle the ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception without handing off to another tech?

I set up a single system that can route neatly across zones. For the quiet moments to the open floor, I just shift the musical temperature instead of swapping gear or introducing a new voice.

In a room this size, I angle the main speakers to avoid glass and parallel walls as much as I can, because early reflections are what turn a clean mix into mud before the night even starts.

Planning around central Ottawa
