Strathmere, from a DJ who's played it.

Strathmere is a 200-acre estate south of Ottawa near North Gower that traces back to 1825, with the stone Farmhouse built in the 1860s. It has run as a country retreat and wedding venue for over 35 years, and it is not a single-room property - couples book one of three distinct spaces: the Farmhouse, the Garden House, or the restored barn known as the Lodge, each with its own outdoor ceremony spot on the grounds. From a DJ's chair that matters because each of the three plays differently. An 1860s fieldstone farmhouse with a covered veranda needs a different setup than a bright, window-lined Garden House looking out over the orchard, and both are different again from the Lodge's open barn beams and stone fireplaces. Sean confirms which of the three you have booked before the day, then builds the sound and the timeline around that specific room rather than a generic country-estate setup.

Three venues, three different rooms.

Strathmere books one of three named venues per wedding, plus the grounds around it. Here is the real shape of each, smallest to largest.

1
The Farmhouse
Intimate, up to 65

1860s fieldstone building with a covered veranda. The smallest and most intimate of the three, seated for dinner.

2
The Garden House
Up to 160

Bright, window-lined room with views over the woods and orchard. Airy rather than heavy, which changes how sound sits in it.

3
The Lodge
Up to 180

A restored 160-year-old barn with original beams and stone fireplaces. The biggest of the three, and the one that can really open up on the dance floor.

4
Gardens & Grounds
200 acres, outdoor ceremony

Countryside gardens, including a certified Monarch butterfly waystation, hold the outdoor ceremony spot for whichever venue you book.

What Sean brings to a Strathmere wedding.

Whichever of the three venues you have, the job is the same: read the actual room instead of assuming it. Sean confirms which of the Farmhouse, Garden House or Lodge you have booked, then plans sound and load-in around that specific building rather than a one-size country-estate package.

The country drive, handled.

Strathmere sits out in the countryside south of Ottawa near North Gower. That rural setting is part of its charm and part of the logistics: it is a real drive out, and an outdoor ceremony on the grounds changes where the sound needs to carry. Sean factors the drive and load-in into the plan so he arrives early, set up is never rushed, and the floor stays full from the first dance to the last whether you are dancing under a roof or under the sky.

Heads up: Sean tailors every set to the actual room. On your call, walk him through your exact run-of-show - which of the three venues you have booked, where the ceremony sits on the grounds, and the indoor-to-outdoor flow - instead of him assuming the layout. That is how the night runs clean at a multi-venue estate like this.

Planning a Strathmere wedding? Here's what I know.

Which of the three venues will my wedding be in?

Strathmere has three distinct spaces: the Farmhouse, an 1860s fieldstone building with a covered veranda for an intimate day; the Garden House, a bright window-lined space looking out over the woods and orchard; and the Lodge, a restored 160-year-old barn with original beams and stone fireplaces for a bigger reception. I set the sound up for whichever one you've booked, not a generic estate setup.

How many guests does Strathmere hold?

It depends on the venue: the Farmhouse seats up to 65 for dinner, the Garden House up to 160, and the Lodge up to 180. The property's overall maximum is 200 guests. I scale sound coverage and dance-floor lighting to your real headcount and room rather than a one-size package.

Where does the ceremony happen?

Strathmere sits on 200 acres of countryside gardens, including a certified Monarch butterfly waystation, and each venue has its own outdoor ceremony spot on the grounds. Confirm your exact spot with the venue, and I'll bring a dedicated wireless system sized for outdoor sound.

How old is Strathmere?

The estate dates back to 1825, and the stone Farmhouse was built between 1860 and 1865. It's operated as a country retreat and wedding venue for over 35 years. I treat the historic buildings the way any older room deserves - sound placed carefully rather than just turned up.

From the booth

Hey, it's Sean. At Strathmere the ceremony happens out in the pavilion and the dancing moves inside. I cover the pavilion for the ceremony and then carry it into the indoor floor, so the transition from vows to party stays seamless.

Good questions

What do you need from us to plan the sound for different parts of the estate?

A quick walkthrough of which areas we are using and when. I then treat each space as its own stage but keep the music continuous so nobody walks into dead air.

Is it harder to keep a dancefloor full when it is outside at a country venue?

Not if the sound is right. Outdoor spaces need more low end and careful speaker placement because there are no walls to reflect the energy. I bring a system built for open air so the floor hits properly.

We might have the ceremony on the lawn and the reception in the main hall. How early do you arrive to set up for that?

I get there well before your first guest. A multi-space setup takes an extra hour to wire and test, but I plan that from the start so the timeline is never tight.

I always put a small satellite speaker near the bar or the seating area farthest from the dancefloor. That way guests who drift for a drink still feel connected to the party, and the energy does not split in half.
