Monogram & Gobo Lighting · Ottawa & Gatineau

Monogram & gobo lighting — your names or a pattern in light.

A custom gobo projects your monogram, names, date, or a pattern onto the dance floor or a wall. Sean sources and coordinates the gobo and runs it off the same lighting rig — one focal point, bundled into your DJ booking.

What a gobo actually is.

A gobo is a small stencil that sits inside a focused light, so the beam comes out the far side carrying a shape instead of a plain circle. Cut that stencil to your initials or your first names and it becomes a monogram light — your design, thrown large across a surface in the room. It is one of the few effects that adds your actual identity to the décor rather than just colour or sparkle, and it gives photographers a clean, repeatable focal point to shoot all night. The image can land on the dance floor as a centrepiece everyone dances over, or up on a clean wall or behind the head table where it reads big in wide shots. Sean reads the room first, because the right surface is what makes a monogram look intentional instead of like a flashlight on a wall.

Names, a monogram, or a pattern.

At a high level there are two ways to go. A custom gobo carries your specific details — your first names, your initials worked into a monogram, your wedding date, or all of it laid out together — and is cut to your design before the day. A pattern gobo skips the text entirely and projects something decorative instead: foliage, geometric texture, soft shapes washed across the floor. Custom reads as "this is us"; a pattern reads as atmosphere. You send the wording or a rough design idea, Sean coordinates the artwork, and you see the layout before it is locked.

Where it lands in the room.

The projector is one fixture, but the placement is the whole decision. Here is how the same monogram plays in different spots:

Dance floor

Centrepiece underfoot

Feature wall

Large in wide photos

Behind head table

Frames the couple

Entrance / foyer

First-look moment

On the planning call Sean looks at your venue, picks the surface that will hold the image cleanest, and folds the placement into the lighting plan for the night.

Pairs with uplighting.

The monogram is the focal point; uplighting is the wash that carries your colour around the rest of the room. Run together they read as one designed look — the walls in your palette, your names crisp on the floor or behind the head table — instead of two effects competing. Because both come bundled with the DJ booking and go in during the same load-in, there is no extra crew, no separate rental window, and no second vendor to chase. Pricing is quoted with your package rather than per unit, since a custom-cut gobo is a different job from a stock pattern; the projector itself is already part of the lighting rig. You will get the real number on a quick call once Sean sees your design and your venue.

Across the region.

Home base is Ottawa, and the monogram setup travels with the DJ booking across the region:

Monogram & gobo FAQ.

What is a gobo, and what is a monogram light?

A gobo is a small stencil placed inside a focused light so the beam projects a shape — your names, your date, or a pattern. A monogram light is just a gobo cut to your design, throwing your custom image onto the floor or a wall. Same gear, different artwork.

Where does the monogram project — on the floor or the wall?

Either, depending on the room. Projected onto the dance floor it becomes a centrepiece everyone dances over; projected onto a clean wall or behind the head table it reads large in photos. Sean picks the surface and the placement based on your venue so the image lands crisp and level.

Can I have our names and date, or only a pattern?

Both are options. A custom gobo can carry your first names, a monogram of your initials, your wedding date, or a decorative pattern with no text at all. You send the wording or a design idea and the artwork is cut to match before the day.

How much does monogram or gobo lighting cost?

It is quoted with your package, not priced per unit, because a custom-cut gobo and a generic pattern are not the same job. When it is bundled into a DJ booking the projector is already part of the lighting rig, so the main variable is the custom artwork. Sean gives the real number on a quick call once he knows your design and venue.

Does the monogram light pair with uplighting?

Yes — they are designed to work together. Uplighting washes the walls in your palette and the monogram is the focal point on the floor or behind the head table, so the colour and the image read as one look. Both are bundled with the booking and set up in the same load-in.
