Lowertown Brewery, from a DJ who's played it.

Lowertown Brewery opened in June 2014 on York Street in the ByWard Market, and it reads like a working brewpub because it is one: an in-house brewery and an open-concept kitchen - smoker and rotisserie running in plain view - sit right in the room, inside a craft, cozy log-camp-style space. It is also not a blank room. The venue already runs live band karaoke on Tuesdays, an open mic on Thursdays and live country music on Saturdays, so there is a working stage and PA footprint on-site before Sean even loads in. From a DJ's chair that changes the plan: this is a room built for people to eat, drink and talk first, so the early set has to sit under the bar noise and the kitchen, not fight it, before it can turn into a dance floor.

The room, from a DJ's chair.

There is no separate ballroom here, so the same room does everything: bar, dinner, stage, dance floor. Here is what actually shapes the night.

1
The Bar
In-house brewery

Lowertown's own beer pours a few feet from the room. Sean keeps the early set at a level that lets people still order and talk over the bar.

2
The Kitchen
Open-concept, smoker + rotisserie

The smoker and rotisserie run in view of the room, so there is already a warm, food-forward energy before the music opens up.

3
The Stage
Karaoke, open mic, live country

The room already hosts live band karaoke Tuesdays, open mic Thursdays and live country Saturdays, so there is an existing stage and PA footprint Sean builds his rig around.

4
The Patio
All-day sun

A sunlit patio off the main room gives an overflow spot for guests before they come back in for the dance floor.

Lowertown Brewery is not a dedicated wedding venue with a built-in ceremony room - confirm ceremony logistics directly with the venue if that is part of your plan. Sean covers whatever private-event format you land on.

What Sean brings to a Lowertown Brewery event.

A working brewpub is not a hotel ballroom. The room is craft and lived-in, the crowd is mixed, and there is already a bar and a kitchen making noise before the DJ opens their mouth. Sean keeps the early set tasteful and background-friendly, works around the venue's existing stage and PA footprint instead of fighting it, and turns the energy up once the room is actually ready to dance.

Honest note: every event uses the room differently. Share your exact run-of-show on the call - where dinner, speeches and dancing land - and Sean tailors the setup to your version of the night.

ByWard Market, right downtown.

Lowertown Brewery sits at 73 York Street in the ByWard Market, close to Rideau Station, with street parking nearby. Downtown Ottawa is home turf for Sean, so load-in and setup around the Market's pedestrian traffic is a planned routine, not a guess.

Planning an event at Lowertown Brewery? Here's what I know.

When did Lowertown Brewery open?

It opened in June 2014 on York Street in the ByWard Market, with its own in-house brewery and an open-concept kitchen.

What does the room actually look like?

Craft, cozy log-camp feel, with the brewery and an open-concept kitchen - smoker and rotisserie included - right in the room, plus a patio that gets sun most of the day. I read that room rather than treat it like a blank ballroom.

Does the venue already have a stage or PA set up?

Yes. It runs live band karaoke Tuesdays, an open mic Thursdays and live country music Saturdays, so there is an existing stage and PA footprint on-site. I work my rig around that footprint instead of starting from a blank room.

Is Lowertown Brewery set up for a full wedding, ceremony included?

It is a working brewpub and live-music bar that books out for private events, not a dedicated wedding venue with a built-in ceremony room. If a ceremony is part of your plan, confirm that directly with the venue - I cover whatever private-event format you land on.

From the booth

Lowertown Brewery is a fun room because the crowd is usually up for anything. I keep the first hour light and social, then lean into the open-format set once people are ready to move. The acoustics are manageable as long as you do not blast the bare walls.

Good questions

How do you handle load-in in the ByWard Market?

I plan around the Market's pedestrian traffic and parking. I bring a compact cart, arrive with time to spare, and coordinate with the venue on the best door for gear.

Can you keep it background-friendly during dinner?

That is the default. I start at conversation volume and build from there. The set only gets loud when the room tells me it is time.

Do you take requests?

I take requests and weigh them against your must-play and do-not-play lists. If something does not fit, I quietly skip it and stay on plan.

If speeches are part of the night, I bring a clean wireless mic and run a quick sound check before doors open so the first toast does not start with feedback.
