How I run a corporate night

A corporate night has a program, so the music has to follow it. I DJ and MC galas, holiday parties, conferences, embassy and government functions, launches and pop-ups in Ottawa and Gatineau.

I do not run on a playlist. I watch the room, and I cue speeches when the last person is sitting down with coffee, whatever the agenda says.

1. Arrival and cocktails

   Quiet background music while people find their seats.

2. Dinner

   Low enough to talk. I turn it up a touch after mains are cleared.

3. Awards and speeches

   I cue each speaker, pass the mic and bring the music under the walk-ups.

4. Dancing

   The floor opens after the formal program, once the bar crowd is ready.

5. Last call

   I finish on your venue's time.

A formal gala or a loud office party

Not every corporate event is the same night. A hotel-ballroom gala stays composed, and a two-hour office party can go louder.

When the night goes off script

I keep a wireless mic ready and a low music bed that can play under a walk-up. If someone gives an unplanned toast, I am ready for it.

Send me a seating chart with the people being called up. I can stall briefly if someone steps out for a call.

Sound, lighting and paperwork

I size the sound to your room and check mics and soundcheck against your AV team or planner. LED uplighting can wash the room in your brand colours, and it is an add-on.

I carry year-round liability coverage and ask for your venue's requirements early. I put your PO number on invoices, and I work under an agency's event without approaching its client directly.

A 50% deposit holds the date, and the balance is due 2 weeks before the event. Pay however works for you.

Booking

How much does a corporate event DJ cost?

It depends on your hours, venue and how much of the day I cover. A hotel gala needs different coverage from a two-hour office party. MC duties, soundcheck and coordination get settled before you book, and brand-colour uplighting is an add-on in the same quote. I reply within 48 hours.

Do you cover Gatineau and the Outaouais for corporate events?

Yes. I am based in Ottawa and cross the river often for Gatineau, Hull, Aylmer and the wider Outaouais. Ottawa, Gatineau and the valley are home turf. Farther out, travel is built into your quote, so there is no surprise line later on your invoice.

On the night

How do you DJ a corporate party?

I keep cocktails and dinner conversational, cue the awards and speeches, then build the dance floor after the program. A holiday party can go louder, and a formal reception stays composed. I read the room instead of running a fixed playlist.

Can you MC and follow our run-of-show?

Yes. I follow your run-of-show for sponsor mentions, awards and speeches, and I handle the move from dinner to dancing. I leave time to soundcheck and to coordinate with your AV team or planner, so nobody is guessing where the mic goes next.

Do you bring sound and lighting for any room?

I check sound and mics against your venue first, from a boardroom to a large ballroom. LED uplighting can wash the room in your brand colours. Lighting is an add-on, so we agree it up front and it is written into your quote before you book.

How do you keep dinner quiet enough to network?

I keep dinner music low enough for normal conversation. The volume rises a little after mains are cleared, and it reaches dance level only after the formal program, when the bar crowd is ready. Nobody has to shout across the table to talk to a client.

How do you handle awards and sponsor mentions?

I use your script and confirm key names with your team. I say each sponsor clearly once, keep my tone calm, and get the award into the right hands. It should feel like part of your event, not a radio contest, so I keep the patter short and clean.

What if the CEO gives an unplanned toast or runs over?

I keep a wireless mic ready and low music under walk-ups. If a speech runs long, I watch for your planner's hand signal, and we can shorten a later segment to recover time. Tell me on the call who handles surprise toasts, so we both know who steps in.
